This afternoon I was invited to a special Portland screening of the British movie "The Damned United." The movie is based off the true story (and book) of English Football manager Brian Clough’s tragic and short 44-day tenure as coach of the reigning champions of English Football Leeds United.

I highly recomend this movie and I'm told the book is great as well.

Today I found a cool cafe to chillout at and drink my afternoon coffee. The place is called Rocking Frog Cafe and it's located at 25th & SE Belmont here in Portland, OR.

The cafe is located in an old house and Has many rooms as well as a backyard to kick back in. This place has a great wifi connection and is populated with PDX creative types working away and drinking coffee.

I for sure will be back for another cup or two in the future.

Proposal To Bring MLS To PDX

Tomorrow, March 11th the City Council votes (@ 9:30am) on the proposal to upgrade PGE Park for a potential Major League Soccer team and to build a new stadium for the AAA Portland Beavers baseball team. The first thing to do is go here:

Is My Domain Name Available?

Type in the Domain name you would like to use in the box. It will tell you if and what is available.
Once you figure out what domain you are going to use you can then go to any hosting site and start the process of starting up your own website.

Normally, regardless of what hosting company you choose you have to sign up and create a profile, it's usually free to do that. Once you have signed up you can now buy your domain name. Many options are available, I would pick a 2-year pre-paid plan, that way you don't have to deal with monthly rates and chances are long term pre-paid plans go for better rates.

Once you have your domain secured you can then purchase your hosting, lot's of different options here.
Many things come into play when buying hosting space. Keep in mind how much space are you going to need for your site. Every plan is a little bit different depending on support, length of plan, space available, month to month or pre-payed options.

Once that is all set the hosting company will send you info about your account. Keep all that info, lots of important codes and what not will be sent to you. At that point you can now set up your e-mail address through your new site name.

Powerful because of the things going on in this song with the vocals and instruments.

I'm a Mac user but this is a nice track anyway even if it was used in a Windows Ad.

Nice tune for sure.

Hope everyone is having a great day. Due to the weather I'm staying up here in Government Camp today and will be celebrating "Christmas" next week with my family. I have been up here at Collins Lake for three weeks now and it has been snowing almost non-stop since. I have been keeping busy by doing some Ski Tech work over at Ski Bowl and doing photography in the garage studio I have set up.

I will be up here until January so if you will be up on Mt. Hood send me a message and we can meet up for a drink over at the Ratskeller.

When I Come Around

So many people are wondering what I have been up to lately, well quite alot actually. The term is just about over at school and that is a good thing. Check over at my other blog Fill Card: SDLenharts' Photo Journal for some of the projects that I have been working on this term. Some of my new work is also posted on my Flickr account.

Also I found out some great news today.

The Integrated Media Department at my school selected me as the Integrated Media Award winner in honor of my dedication to my studies in IM: Digital Photography program. I now get a full tuition waiver for the Winter term!

I'm super happy about winning this award, it's a great honor to be recognized in this way by the Integrated Media Department.

The Season Is Here

It's great to see Mt. Hood looking like it should, covered in white powder. Most of my friends are getting ready for the Ski / Snowboard season by getting new gear and laying down cash on season passes. Well not all the lifts are open yet on Hood but some shredding is still going to be taking place this weekend and you don't even need to be on the mountain to check it out.

This Saturday November, 22nd starting at noon on 1122 NW Davis St., The Backyard Bang Rail Jam is going off. This sounds like a great time to get back into winter vibe.

Hike, Fish & Go Camping?

I heard about this drink called Hike, Fish, & Go Camping Punch over the summer and finely had a chance to try it out this past weekend. This drink combines all local (Oregon) ingredients. Try it for yourself.

ENJOY

5 oz Pendleton Whiskey
4 oz (1/3 of 12 oz can) frozen lemonade
4 oz (1/3 of 12 oz can) frozen limeade
4 oz huckleberry syrup
2 bottles Terminal Gravity IPA
Mint sprigs for garnish

Mix whiskey, lemonade, limeade and huckleberry syrup in a large pitcher. Slowly stir in Terminal Gravity IPA. Pour into ice-filled glasses, top with mint sprigs and serve.

To make huckleberry syrup: Bring 2 cups of water, 1 cup of sugar and 2 cups of berries to a boil. Simmer 20 -30 minutes, cool slightly and strain mixture through fine mesh sieve.

Those of us in the state of Oregon are so very fortunate that we no longer have to stand in long lines to cast our ballots on election day (& during early voting). This is because our state passed an initiative in 1998 that required all election procedures to be conducted by the vote-by-mail system. This allows the voter to either mail-in or drop off ballots at official drop sites. Because of this, Oregon has both reduced the cost of elections and increased participation.

This is a reminder for those of you who have not yet sent in your Oregon ballot.

ONLY Ballots that are received at a County Elections Office ANYTIME BEFORE 8:00pm THIS TUESDAY NOVEMBER 4th will be counted.

POSTMARKS DO NOT COUNT!

REMEMBER you can also drop ballots at ANY designated drop site BY 8:00pm TUESDAY.

Instead of sending all those "political forwards", how about sending an encouraging message to all your e-mail contacts to GET THE VOTE IN.

Tonight marks the start of a very anticipated Portland Trailblazers season. Although the Blazers will be one of the youngest teams in the NBA (again), fans of the Red & Black see this team as one who has potential to take a giant leap in the league standings.

Last season after gaining the #1 overall selection in the draft, the club picked college superstar Greg Oden from Ohio State. Unfortunately his first professional season was delayed due to injury, but now Oden is back and ready to establish himself in the league.

Even without the potential NBA Rookie of the Year and a future NBA Superstar the team finished in it's best position in many years, (no longer the Jail Blazers, thank you!) instead of being dead last the team finished dead even in the win, loss category a year ago.

More is expected this season with the addition of Spanish superstar Rudy Fernandez and the surprising 19 year old kid from France, Nicolas Batum. This team is young and damb good.

So in case you missed it, last Sunday on "Meet the Press" Republican Colin Powell endorsed Democrat Barack Obama. That endorsement from Powell brought this reaction from Rush Limbaugh.

Five years ago today Elliott Smith, my favorite Portland musician, took his own life, having stabbed himself in the chest with a kitchen knife. A sad and tragic end to a very talented individual.

On that day five years ago I remember being at work and hearing a rumor that Elliott Smith was found dead. Later that night I found out more details from someone who knew Elliott. He like others was in shock.

In the days and weeks following his death an impromptu memorial had been established on 12th & SE Elliott, about twenty feet from Division Street, just outside of Ladd's Edition, the neighborhood Elliott had once lived. It was an emotional place to pass everyday on my way to work.

Super Human Times Ten

Last night I attended the Portland edition of Henry Rollins' latest roadshow. According to his website 21361 he states, that this tour is to celebrate the end of the Bush era. If this night is my final memory of the Bush era I will be one happy camper thanks to Henry.

On this night Rollins was in prime form, weaving in and out of stories that only he can deliver. The show lasted over an hour and by the end I felt like I knew both Henry and myself a little better. He is like an eccentric relative that you only see once a year, but when in-town you connect with them even though much of the year they are a big mystery.

He packed his show full of current project updates, psychotic stories, poems and many off the cuff conversations with himself. He noted many times throughout his show his deep fondness for the city of Portland, even stating he was jealous because we can go to Powell's Books any day of the year.

Henry Rollins is a lengend, his presence is something to behold, intense, intelligent, angry, compassionate you name it, he is it, times ten.

O.K. so this week I have done things a bit differently, due to the fact that this is such a wonderful photo. This past Friday a friend and I took a hike from Ski Bowl East to Trillium Lake (see photo above), a loop that is about 12 miles round-trip. It's sort of crazy to think about in mid July but, half a mile into the hike we hit snow.

On our way back we ran into a crazy guy in his mid 50's that had gotten his car stuck in the snow. The next hour was spent helping this guy dig his car out of the snow pack (see photo below of my friend Chris digging). I mostly sat and watched as he was nice enough to share his emergency beer stash with us.

Much of my teen and early twenty's were spent going to see live music from bands signed on Seattle's, Sub Pop Records. One show that I will never forget was the 5th Anniversary Blowout Celebration of Sub Pop Records. My how time fly's. Today Sub Pop celebrates its 20th year of operation.

That night fifteen years ago, at a one-off venue, The Motor Sports Garage (the car race garage for Seattle's Motor Sports Racetrack) me and some three to four thousand kids watched in awe as The Dwarves, The Melvins, Love Battery, Tad and Nirvana (pre-Nevermind) set the night on fire and forever changed the history of Rock and Roll Music.

My Virtual World

Without my MacBook Pro I don't know what I would do. This thought process is new to me as my laptop is less than one year old and it's also the first computer that's solely mine. When I first purchased this computer about the only presence I had in the virtual world was an e-mail account and some random membership registrations on a few message boards.

Now, in less than a year, I have setup accounts on many social networking sites. At first I was a wee bit leery of getting wrapped up into this whole virtual world, but I have been surprised by how beneficial this modern form of communication and expression is.

The benefits (for me) of social networking:

Keeping my mind busy thinking of subjects to share with others.
Staying in closer contact with friends (and others) who in the past I might have lost connection with.
Being inspired by others who are also social networking.

Blows Me Away

I found this clip awhile ago and it got me thinking about how foolish some people are. No matter how many times I watch, I'm still surprised by these responses.

On another note, in the same vain (but not the racist part like above)

The other night I was talking with a lady about snowboarding and traveling. This ladies daughter is an up and coming Boardercross racer who trains with the United States Olympic Team. At an age of only seventeen her daughter spends the year racing at locations all-over the globe. From time to time her mother is able to also travel with her daughter.

So, as we were chatting she mentioned that she traveled to Germany this past year. Although she did not care for Germany she did love Munich. As we were talking I got the impression she was unsure about what country Munich was in. She then went on to say that she loved the country of Europe. I quickly corrected her and said Europe is a Continent, but she did not flinch. Maybe the saddest thing of all 'tho, was when she thought the "Iraq" war was actually taking place in Kuwait.

I sure hope her daughter is getting a better education than her mom did.

A New Kind Of Balance

I thrive when I have balance and structure in my daily activities. So, with me living in a less hectic, and more tranquil environment this summer, I have found new ways to both enjoy the great outdoors and meet interesting people.

Every Wednesday at the Mt. Hood Cultural Center & Museum they have a yoga session. Although I have only practiced yoga a few times, I think this activity is a beneficial way to spent my Wednesday nights, both mentally and physically.

The benefits of yoga are many, some of them include; improved flexibility, tones and builds muscles, corrects posture, eases back pain, relieves stress, relaxes the mind and body and frees the spirit.

So far here are the other daily activities that I do throughout the week:

Spaghetti Sunday, every Sunday I make pasta.
Movie Monday, normally I don't watch many movies but on this night I do.
Ultimate Frisbee in Welches and Taco Tuesday at The Ratskeller.
Yoga every Wednesday at the Cultural Center.

Every Monday throughout the summer I will be taking a photo of Mt. Hood, from the same location (Ski Bowl East, horseshoe pit) and posting it, in order to track the weekly progression of its snow melt.

Mt. Hood with an elevation of 11,239 is the highest peek in the state of Oregon and is also the second most summited mountain in the world. Eleven glaciers line its year round snow pack but it's obvious to those who have lived around the area that these glaciers are quickly disappearing.

According to scientists Mt. Hood's shrinking glaciers are typical of a worldwide trend.

Although tomorrow is the official start of Summer, mine has already started. Last week brought the school year to a close and with that, I relocated once again back up to Government Camp, OR. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this Village, it is located at the 3,900 foot elevation mark at the base of Mt. Hood.

Right now as I look out the window at my local coffee shop for all I know it could be late October, not early June. To get a better idea of the setting it looks like this; the wind is blowing, the sky is gray and the ground is damp.

The Art Of Letter Writing

When was the last time you sat down and wrote a letter to a friend or a loved one? I'm not talking about an e-mail or even a note to be hand delivered, but rather a letter that goes into an envelope, slapped with a stamp and then dropped into the mailbox.

Because the handy nature of technological communication (e-mails & text messages) letter writing has turned into a novelty and with that fewer and fewer people are writing and receiving traditional letters. I would have to admit that it has been sometime since I have composed a letter and sent it off.

The reason I bring this subject up is because I will be relocating for the summer and a friend of mine, also relocating, thought it would interesting to stay in touch by writing letters back and forth during this time. This is a grand idea in my opinion because writing and receiving letters is more of an intimate experience than the more "modern" forms of written communication.

With a handwritten letter you get to express your personality not only in handwriting but also in other ways like colors, texture (of the paper), size (of the writing), smell, noise (of the paper), envelope and choice of stamp. None of this can truly be duplicated in an e-mail on a computer screen.

Dramatic Light

Last night I attended a photographic workshop hosted by the amazing photographer, Michael Grecco. Grecco's early career started as a freelance photojournalist for the Associated Press. While shooting for the AP he was also getting his images into such magazines as Newsweek and Time, but his early career will be most remembered for his work at the Boston Herald.

As a staff photographer at the Boston Herald, Grecco won numerous awards for his images, with the highlight coming in 1985 when he documented the devastation of Hurricane Gloria. As Grecco explained last night, he felt this type of news photojournalism was not his calling and became dissatisfied, so he changed paths.

From that time, Grecco has been working on his own terms, a decision he felt he needed to make as artistic photographer and documentarian. He is now known for his dramatic lighting style that is created using light sources that are very close to the subject, often within two or three feet.

Grecco gave a quick rundown on what goes into his photo shoots. First it involves researching his subject and scouting the shooting location. After that he then comes up with a creative plan often using his style of sly humor and irony to tell a story or emphasize an idea. Then once on the set, Grecco adds one light at a time, examining each shot and light on his calibrated computer screen. This is where his creative process begins to take life as he adds additional sources of light in areas he sees fit. When doing this he creates little pools of light on the subject and this is what gives his images its dramatic feel and style. (amazing stuff)

As a young child of ten years at the time I can still recall this day like it was yesterday. For those of you who were not around at the time or did not grow up in The Great Pacific Northwest, this was the day of Mount St. Helens big eruption.

Prior to this day their had been months of buildup because the mountain had become very active with thousands of little earthquakes and some minor relief of ash and steam. Luck for me this volcano was some distance from my home (53 miles north of Portland, OR) but just close enough were I could get a good look at its activity from my backyard.

The interesting thing about this eruption was that it did not involve lava spilling over its top like you see in PBS documentaries, instead it was all ash. The eruption of Mount St. Helens was one huge explosion as it went from an elevation of 9,677 feet prior to the eruption down to 8,365 feet after it was all said and done.

The ash that was released by St. Helens darkened sky's all over the Northwest and I remember seeing on the news that the city of Yakima, Wa had a giant ash storm and blackout in the middle of the day . Portland also had an ash storm and it did turn on the street lamps but it was not quite as bad as the one in Yakima.

Today is a very exciting day. The sun is out, the air is quite warm and fresh vegetables are to be had at the local farmers market. So I rode my bike down the street to the weekly (every Wed. year round 2-7pm) farmers market at People's Food Co-op. This market is quite small in size compared to the other markets around town but it's always good for a crisp apple or a snappy carrot to snack on between meals.

Now that spring has sprung here in the City of Roses most of the farmers markets around town are officially open for business. Here is a rundown of a few that I enjoy.

Japanese World Cup Star Shines In The Rose City

Takayuki Suzuki is already a legend here in the Rose City and he has only played three matches with the Portland Timbers thus far. His strike this past Saturday against the much hated Seattle Sounders was a thing of beauty, as he singlehandedly broke down the Sounders defense. The PTFC (Portland Timbers Football Club) is once again off to a flying start as they have three wins in the first three matches.

On this date in 1785 naturalist, painter and ornithologist John James Audubon was born. Audubon is know for his paintings and descriptions of North American birds. He was born in Saint Domingue, now known as Haiti. He died in Manhattan, NY on January 27, 1851 at the age of 65.

The National Audubon Society was named in his honor in 1905. Its mission "is to converse and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habitats for the benefit of humanity and the earth's biological diversity".

"Lawmakers and the NAACP are calling for an investigation into reports that federally funded scientific experiments in 2000 spread sewage sludge on yards in poor black neighborhoods to test if it could fight lead poisoning in children. The Associated Press reported Sunday that researchers spread a mix of human and industrial wastes from sewage treatment plants on the lawns of nine low-income families in Baltimore and a vacant lot next to an elementary school in East St. Louis, Illinois."

Earth Day has always held a special place in my life, as my father, now a retired Biologist was involved in the very first Earthday events, thirty eight years ago. As the story goes my father was sent back to Washington D.C. earlier in the year to be educated on the message of Earth Day and its hopeful future. For the actual events of the day my father gave various lectures at High Schools around the Portland, metro area. But on this particular day my father had more than just a clean earth on his mind.

During each break and after each lecture my father would call my mother, because she was about to give birth to, well me. As my mother recalls she said that day was a bit crazy as my dad was zooming around Portland giving talks on the Earth and she was at home wondering just when that decisive moment would be. Luckily I was born four days later on the 26th. (when things were not so busy for the two of them. hehe)

Looking back now it is amazing how Earth Day has become a great worldwide event that brings awareness and real environmental issues into a mainstream consciousness. Even looking back just twenty years ago environmental issues were not something that people tended to talk about in great detail. I think Earth Day, both its hype and its events has become a catalyst for the environmental movement....So Happy Earth Day everyone!

Reading Is Cool

Like normal I find myself reading more than one book at a time. Right now I'm bouncing back and forth between "Deep Economy: The Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future" by Bill McKibben and "A Gradual Awakening" by Stephen Levine.

Both books have been inspiring in very different ways as "Deep Economy" is a reality check on the past, present and future in regards to peek oil, global warming and global interdependences and "A Gradual Awakening" is a book of meditation and Buddhism.

I would highly recommend both books, but maybe not read at the same time like I have done. (ha!) Here are some other book and spoken word things that I suggest you check out:

Olympic Torch(er)

As we approach the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China has been thrust into the global spotlight. Their iron-fisted policy's in regards to Tibet and the manner in which the recent protests and the riots that followed have drawn much criticism world-wide. Many politicians are calling for a boycott of the Olympic Games opening ceremony's, in hopes that it will achieve a resolution to the current situation.

I have to agree that something needs to happen to change the situation in Tibet and China in general. So what would a boycott of the opening ceremony's really accomplish?

My thoughts on this are that right now world governments, human rights groups and activists must seize (and have) the moment to send a message to the Chinese government. Currently all eyes and cameras are on China and to me it looks as if the Chinese government is uncomfortable with that. For so long the power brokers of the world have looked away as China has gone on to crackdown on it's own citizens by limiting freedom of the press and outlawing democratic movements. Because we have looked away for so long they are now finally being exposed for the things that they have always done but now are uneasy about the exposure and criticism that they are being subject to.

It is interesting because the Olympics traditionally has been a time when humanity can at least for a moment put politics aside and celebrate different cultures through the commonality of athletics. Well now we have all seen in the media that the host country, the very country that was chosen to be the platform for this celebration goes against the very principals of the Olympics, by cracking down in Tibet. Right now China is threatening Tibetan culture.

At the end of March Buddhist monks took to the streets of Lhasa to mark the anniversary of the 1959 uprising against Chinese rule. When they did this the Chinese government sent in soldiers and an outbreak of violence occurred. At first the government denied this but later it was reveled that the Chinese soldiers killed eighty to one hundred Tibetan marchers.

All of this should not be surprising as many voices around the world questioned the original idea of awarding China the Olympics in the first place. Now we hear that athletes, journalists and attendees have all be warned not to make any sort of political statement(s) during the games.

To me, if this is the case I say boycott the opening ceremony's, it will be one more message that the world can send to the Chinese government and one more reason for them to be uncomfortable.

About time I say.

As many of you know I'm currently a student at a local college here in Portland. My major is Digital Photography and the actual program of study is called Integrated Media. This term in addition to my photography classes I have Web Design II and ART279 (this class revolves around a group of three people working on a as of yet to be named digital media project).

All of this leads me up to some interesting things that have been going on in these classes that I would like to share. In Web Design our class is being taught by one of the founders of Sparkplug. They are a web design company that uses "behavioral science" to find out just what sort of web site would be best for both the company and the potential web surfer / consumer.

Well so far in this class I have confirmed what I already knew about myself but I find it interesting none-the-less.

One of the things that I pride myself on is keeping a diverse and more or less obscure music library (that rocks!). I have always done this through the years staring with my record collection and recently advancing into the MP3 digital realm.

I often hear people say that music recorded and released these days sucks and so do all the bands. Well in my mind these so called critics just don't know where to look, because nearly everyday I come across a band or song that sticks in my head.

The songs, bands & styles of music that I enjoy vary depending on a whole list of things (weather, mood, seasons, relationships, you name it). Below is a small list of some tunes that I have been digging on lately.

Road Trippin'

So, spring break has just ended and the puddles of winter are starting to dry up, now what? Summer Road Trips! This time of the year is great for reflecting back, but also it causes me to think about the upcoming summer months. No summer is complete IMO without a few road trips, on top of many camping and hiking adventures that the warm weather always inspires me to take.

Thinking about road trips makes me reminisce about my adventures on the would famous Green Tortoise. Several years back on three separate occasions I took the Green Tortoise from Portland, OR to San Francisco, CA. These trips were always super fun for me, as I would go solo and just take in all the craziness that a ride on "The Tortoise" has to offer.

Things that make for a great Green Tortoise ride:

Drivers that will go to out of the way places to pickup & drop off passengers.
Everyone helping out with cooking (dinners/breakfast).
Hot springs at Cow Creek!
All the funny, strange & cool people at the back of the bus.
Safety breaks every two hours at some remote rest stop.
The bus seats turn into bunk beds!
Wondering if the Green Tortoise is actually going to make it without breaking down!

It's also fun to note that a former house mate of mine went on the Baja Beach Daze Trip and ended up being voted "Miss. Margarita" by her fellow adventurers. (hehe)

I have been doing Photography for twenty years, nineteen spent in the darkroom. This year I finally broke down and decided to go back to school and study Digital Photography, this has turned out to be the best decision I have ever made (no joke). Above is a shot I took the other day when I was tracking through the snow.

Suds, Slopes & Cancer

March is Ride for Cancer Research Month at Skibowl.
During the entire month of March:

$1 from every lift ticket sold (up to 25,000) goes directly to Cancer Research.
$2 from every pizza sold at the Ratskeller in Government Camp goes directly to Cancer Research.

This years events included the vertical challenge, mechanical bull rides, a rail jam, beer sampling, live music and best off all, pond skimming! It was an awesome day as the sun was out and the spirits were high, here on Mt. Hood. In order to get close to the action I had to sacrifice myself to the pond gods. Let's not beat around the bush, I got soaked early and often while taking these photos.

Winter Soldier

All this week Democracy Now has been playing clips of the four day Winter Soldier gathering taking place at the National Labor College in Silver Spring, Maryland. The event is organized and led by Iraq Veterans Against the War and involves soldiers who are giving eyewitness accounts of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Many of the accounts are tough to listen to but, they are the best insights I have heard yet, to the human cost of the war and occupation.

If you are not subscribed to the Democracy Now audio or video podcast you should be IMO. But in any case you can still watch or listen to each show from the Democracy Now website.

Web Surfing For Monkeys

I just added a web browser plugin called StumbleUpon. It's both crazy (in a bad way) & cool (in a good way). So basically you setup all these different channels of personal interests (127 max), and you push the Stumble! button. It sends you to sites that you might have a personal interest in. This is way better than any channel surfing I have ever done, that's for sure! Here are some I have found.

This weekend all across the nation, large demonstration against the United States continued involvement in Iraq is taking place. Today, right here in the Rose City several thousand people gathered for a day of education and mobilization. The Portland event was sponsored by PDX Peace (a coalition of justice groups, churches & other organizations). A friend of mine took some photos at this afternoons peace march and I hope to get some posted soon. In the mean time here is a poster I created in Photoshop More here.

I Ride The Short Bus

OK, so I ride on the local bus system (Tri-Met) here in Portland, OR almost everyday. Ha, you laugh but I laugh to, because some funny moments happen on the bus. I think of each stop as a new act of a never ending play (and just think it only costs $1.75). Most of the things I have seen and heard on the bus throughout the years can be unbelievably entertaining (oh yes it can). But sometimes it can be shocking and down right depressing. Like the time when I had to yell at a guy who tried to rub my leg, after which he moved to another seat only to try this again on another passenger. He ended up with a purse smashed in his face and was appropriately kicked off the bus.

It would be interesting to read some of the experiences that you have from riding on public transportation. At some point I will post a crazy one from years back. It's a true classic of good winning out over evil.
